Explore Hodges

The town of Hodges has an eccentric history that begins with Revolutionary War heroes and includes one of the earliest examples of a planned community built around a group of Methodist church educators. The remnants of that community can still be seen at Tabernacle Cemetery and Cokebury College, now a beautiful event venue with a restored interior and formal gardens. It’s also the home of the forerunner of one of the first Black colleges in the area.

Then came the railroad, and a real personality change for Hodges. Not only did Hodges grow as a result of the railroad, its reputation grew as well, and it came to be called “Sin City” or “Hell Hole.”

The trains that brought people seeking the wilder entertainments of Hodges also supported the textile mills. And the mills spawned Textile League baseball teams throughout the area. Today’s town hall was once the Bank of Hodges, where “secret” banking still went on in spite of the forced Bank Holiday at the start of the Depression.

The town is known for its spring and fall festivals, and there’s plenty of outdoor fun to be had. The Long Cane Horse Trail is a favorite of horseback riders and mountain bikers.
